The Season for Nonviolence, the Season for Peace is a time of year, coinciding with the memorials of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, in which there is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world.

Won’t you join UNITY and contribute in your way to world peace? Stay tuned for more information around what we will have in store for you this season, including music from a myriad of religious practices, and a study series on Oneness.

On Sunday, 12/11, we held our 2nd Annual 25 Cent Toys for Girls and Boys Toy Drive.  We invited 20 local West Linn low income families, through Bolton and Cedaroak Park Primary schools, to shop for brand new toys.  They got to shop at the store we set up in our basement, then have them wrapped (they helped) and tagged, and then bought them for 25 cents each!  We had enough toys to give each kid 2, plus a stocking stuff and a game.

We estimate there were about 75 kids that will receive gifts this Christmas.

THANK YOU to all who bought toys, set up the store, stayed to help wrap and be at the event, clean up, and even make gifts.  It could not have gone better!

There were some remaining toys after the event, and they were donated to the David Douglas School district.  Some baby toys went to the teen moms daycare!

The Group – featuring the incredible vocals of Mary Etta Caller, Arietta Ward, and Ron Shoals as well as the acclaimed Ms. Steele – will be joined by Mark Steele on keyboards, Janice Scroggins on piano, recording artist Renato Caranto on sax, blues legend and Oregon Music Award winner “The Boogie Cat” Norman Sylvester, Ghanaian drummer Obo Addy, Ben Jones on bass guitar, and Tyrone Hendricks , drummer who has played with Stevie Wonder. Ms. Steele advises there may also be a couple of surprise performances.

 

This not-to-be-missed holiday concert at The UNITY Center, 20255 Willamette Drive, West Linn is being offered for an admission of $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Buy them here:

We are closing the door on our renovations and moving a few steps down the hall into our new sacred space.  This week is dress rehearsal.  The walls are painted, the carpet is laid, new light fixtures are in.  You don’t want to miss it!

The Gospel Quartet will be back to celebrate our first service in the new sanctuary.  You will feel moved (literally and figuratively), inspired and awakened when you attend this Sunday and listen to the special music.

This free event will feature expert speakers, tips and information from local, eco-friendly business and organizations, and tours of the Cent…er’s rain garden. Kid-friendly activities are expected to run simultaneously.

 

Bill Lakey of Organically Grown Company will help participants make sense of produce choices. Local? Organic? Both? Jack Graves, Chief Cultural Officer for Burgervillle, will explain how fast food can be healthy and eco-friendly. Local recycling expert, Jean Baumann, will show how to reduce

household garbage to only one bag a month. Finally, Jim Newcomer of Transitions PDX will address the question “ Is sustainability enough?”
